Boilers & Heating GUIDE

How and When to Bleed a Radiator

Signs of trapped air and the basic precautions to take when bleeding radiators.

Quick answer

Gurgling noises or a radiator that stays cold at the top can indicate trapped air. Bleeding releases that air so hot water can circulate through the radiator.

Understanding the issue

Gurgling noises or a radiator that stays cold at the top can indicate trapped air. Bleeding releases that air so hot water can circulate through the radiator.

What to check

Turn the heating off and allow radiators to cool before using the correct radiator key. Open the bleed point slowly with a cloth ready, closing it when water begins to appear.

When to get advice

After bleeding, check boiler pressure because releasing air can reduce system pressure. If radiators repeatedly fill with air, arrange further investigation.

Safety first

This is general information, not a substitute for inspecting your property. Do not work on gas equipment or live electrical parts unless appropriately qualified. If there is immediate danger, call 999. If you smell gas or suspect a gas escape, leave the affected area and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 from a safe location. Do not operate electrical switches or use naked flames.
